A bigger blow to the Nationalists came when Angus Robertson, their impressive leader at Westminster, was turfed out of his Moray seat. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon used a a speech in the North East today to announce a study into faster rail journeys between Scotland and England, saying both parts of the UK stand to benefit from closer links.
Mrs Sturgeon confirmed that feasibility studies were being commissioned to identify options to help improve train journey times, capacity, resilience and reliability on services between Scotland and England. Studies would be taking place on both east and west coast rail routes, with the first looking at how the route between Dunbar, in the south east of Scotland, and Newcastle could be improved to effectively decrease journey times by a third.
The announcement was made as the First Minister spoke to North East England Chamber of Commerce members in Gateshead, saying her administration was also looking at improvements to the A1 and A68 roads to provide better transport between Scotland and the North East. This work could have significant benefits for people and businesses on both sides of the border. The Scottish Government had hoped to reduce and then abolish APD north of the border, leading to concerns from Newcastle Airport that it would be undercut by competitors like Edinburgh. But those plans hit a snag last month when it emerged the Scottish plans could fall foul of European state aid rules. Under questioning from the airport, Mrs Sturgeon said she would back a proposal put forward by Newcastle for all APD to be reduced by a quarter.

Through the window, beyond the sodden wallabies, and largely obscured by heavy grey clouds, lay two of the peaks that soar so unexpectedly from this otherwise pan-flat expanse of Victoria — Mount Sturgeon and its little brother, the Picaninny. I was supposed to be scaling those two suckers — when suddenly the lure of a comfy sofa was far greater. I downed the dregs and was about to order another when the showers suddenly ceased and the clouds parted, revealing the tops of the two peaks.
Expecting to find others taking advantage of the improved weather, I found the car park occupied by nothing more than a pair of kangaroos. They hopped off, while I hopped on, over rocks, through bracken, past glum-looking lizards and twisted tree roots, to the top. The sun was out now, and the views 1, ft m up, north towards the rest of the range and south across unbroken plains, were stunning. And I had them to myself.
