The first scenario involves both partners being climbers.
Andrew Foster, 32, was trapped when more than 1, tonnes of rock fell from the face of the El Capitan monolith on Wednesday. A spokesman for the park confirmed Mr Foster’s identity, while his wife – who was also hiking – was injured and remains in hospital. It has been reported that her injuries were critical. The pair, found with climbing equipment, are believed to have been scouting out the ascent from a trail when a “sheet” of granite around 40 metres by 20 metres plummeted from a height of metres.
They were crushed by falling rocks. They are the only known casualties despite being with a group of other climbers when the series of collapses struck, but a search is ongoing. One witness, Mike Kane, tweeted that the collapse was “very loud”, adding it was a “miracle more were not hurt”. Mr Foster’s death is the first fatality from a rock fall in the park in four years when another climber was killed, according to the parks service.

This is a double edged sword because I have personally experienced some of the best relationships with my climbing partners, but suffered some of the worst breakups ever. As far as I am concerned, there are two types of women climbers: We all start somewhere.

For many climbers, the gyms are a meat market, a place to go pick up the latest bouldering stud or sport climbing babe. For others, the climbing gyms are more of a butcher shop, a place to get shut down. Big walls, sport climbing, ice climbing, trad climbing, bouldering, mountaineering, — every style of climbing involves serious athleticism.
Climbers as a group are lean, strong and physically fit. Climbers have amazing backs, abs and arms. Though at times, because of really strong forearms and fingers, holding hands can be really intense. Dating a climber guarantees a good looking partner. Climbers are an adventurous bunch and that means traveling across the world, the nation, and the state to climbing destinations. Dating a climber means that dates double as climbing trips. Vacations become sport climbing trips to Greece and spring break with the wife and kids happens in Fontainebleau. Dating a climber means lots of exciting traveling. A Partner in Crime Dating a climber means having an easily accessible partner, often one who will put up with 4 am alpine starts to the sport crag, heinous multi-hour hanging belays and grueling 16 pad sherpa missions because they love you. Having a partner in crime also means sharing rewards.

My initial draft was words, the final draft is approximately 95 words which means there are a load of prose not included.
So on a run-up to Tides being published, I thought I publish some out-takes here as a bit of a teaser. This number 1 is a mish-mash of an essay I wrote that was first published in the CC journal and some of it was also published in Echoes.
